Have you been told that you have too much astigmatism for contact lenses?
Astigmatism is when the clear, dome-shaped tissue in the front of the eye (called the cornea) is not perfectly smooth all the way around. When someone has a high amount of astigmatism, it can make it difficult for a contact lens to sit properly on the eye. Astigmatism is actually very common, but some conditions can cause irregular, or high amounts of astigmatism. Some of these conditions include corneal irregularities from refractive surgery such as LASIK, PRK and RK, and degenerative corneal diseases like Keratoconus. These can make it very difficult to fit and wear contact lenses because the shape of the cornea is not ideal. The fit just never seems to match perfectly and both vision and comfort get compromised.
Great news, Tasman Eye Consultants now fits scleral contact lenses! These are large diameter hard contact lenses that completely vault over the cornea. Because they go over the cornea without even touching it, scleral lenses can be customized to fit any cornea, including irregular corneas with high amounts of astigmatism. Although they are larger, they are very comfortable because the lens edges are tucked underneath the eyelids which eliminates the lid interaction with the eyelids. Scleral Contact Lenses are also being used for patients who have severe Dry Eye Disease including Sjogrens‘s Syndrome, glare reduction from aniridia/albinism, play water sports, and more. "Being an avid golfer and hunter, my game was beginning to suffer due to difficulty with my vision. I had worn glasses from a very early age and knew the struggle of not being able to see as a child. As an adult, I had RK surgery but as time grew on it had run its course so I was back to needing glasses. After years of glasses, soft contact lens, RGP lens, and eventually a piggy back of both RGP and soft lens, I was beginning to think I might not be able to enjoy the activities I loved. Tasman Eye Consultants introduced me to Scleral Lenses. I haven’t been able to see this clearly in many years. I can now spot golf balls flying through the air and see deer across the field. Scleral Lenses have increased my quality of life with such an improvement in my vision.”
